Launch of the 3rd Myanmar Responsible Tourism Awards

Initiated by the Myanmar Responsible Tourism Institute (MRTI) in 2017, this will be the third year that the Myanmar Responsible Tourism Awards (MRTA) are being presented.

MRTA 2019 is organised in collaboration with Australian Volunteers International (AVI), an Australian government initiative, which supports skilled Australians to volunteer overseas to contribute to locally driven sustainable development. The AVI donation to the MRTA 2019 is made on behalf of the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT).

MRTA works to raise awareness of the high potential that Myanmar’s tourism industry has tog generate meaningful social, economic, and environmental benefits. The Awards aim to shine a spotlight on the remarkable achievements of tourism businesses that are changing travel in innovative ways, inspire others to adopt responsible tourism practices, and encourage competition to make sustainable and inclusive tourism the standard in Myanmar.

Last years the quality of entries proved the passion and dedication of local tourismb businesses to lead the way in responsible tourism standards.

Best Practice in Child Safe Tourism Award

Jennifer Jones, from Australian Volunteers International (AVI), launched the new MRTA, ‘Best Practice in Child Safe Tourism’ award. Jennifer talked about a new Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) funded three year Child Safe Volunteering Hub being launched in Myanmar by AVI this year. Jennifer encouraged nominations for the ‘Best Practice on Child Safeguarding in Tourism’ award from any initiative in the tourism sector that helps keep children safe, happy and healthy.

This year the Awards will honour tourism industry leaders and innovators in eight categories:

  • Best Responsible Tourism Accommodation
  • Best Responsible Tourism Operator
  • Best Community Involvement in Tourism
  • Best Responsible Tourism Business Innovation
  • Best Responsible Tourism Awareness Raising Project
  • Start-ups in Tourism
  • Best Practice on Child Safeguarding in Tourism
  • Best Practice in Carbon Footprint Reduction in Tourism

MRTI encourages organizations of all types and sizes to enter. The application window will open on Monday 15th July 2019. Entry kits and further details are available at www.myanmarresponsibletourismawards.org.
